The church is situated on a  buttress above the main road that runs along the lake. This road was built in the second decade of last century. Before that, to go from Oria to San Mamete one had to go through lower Albogasio, climb the hill to the church and then descend the 120 steps of the mule-track called ”La Calcinera”. On the outside of the south wall of the church, facing the lake, seven coat-of-arms of as many Milan bishops who visited Valsolda, episcopal feud from the Middle Ages until 1783 when Valsolda was incorporated in the Austrian Lombard-Venitian State. The building was erected in stages between the middle of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th. The interior decoration was practically re-done in 1918.
It gives one the impression of a feast of forms and colours. In the esemble of sculptural and pictorial decorations, work of local artists, the eye is caught by many delightful figures of angels, above all puttoes represented in the most various and impish poses. The illusionistic effect of the simulated architecture which frames the frescoes in the side chapels is also very pleasing.
